When PNG is useful
PNG is a lossless format, which makes it a good fit for graphics, screenshots, and images with sharp text or edges that shouldn't degrade further. It also supports transparency — useful if you're about to edit the image further and want that option available, even though this particular conversion won't add transparency to a JPG that didn't have any.
Good to know
Because PNG re-encodes losslessly, converting an already-compressed JPG to PNG doesn't lose additional image quality — but it also doesn't recover quality the JPG already lost. The output file is often larger than the original JPG, since PNG doesn't use JPEG-style lossy compression.
JPG to PNG FAQ
Will converting a JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. A JPG file has no transparency data to begin with, so the PNG you get will still be fully opaque. Converting formats can't add transparency that wasn't there.
Will the PNG be smaller or larger than my JPG?
Often larger. PNG is lossless and JPG is already heavily compressed, so re-encoding a photo as PNG frequently increases file size — this depends on the image content and isn't guaranteed either way.
Does this work for files ending in .jpeg as well as .jpg?
Yes — JPG and JPEG are the same format, just different file extensions.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API.
